Saturday College Baseball Top-50 Scoreboard/Wrapup (5/14/11)

Navy and Bucknell staged a classic battle of wills on Saturday in their Patriot League semifinal series opener, with the lower-seed Bison scoring in the top of the 16th and going on to the nerve-wracking 1-0 win (top seed Navy won gm-2, with the decisive game now set for Sunday; winner gets Army in the title series). It was a jam-packed day throughout college baseball, including 52 games that were scheduled involving CB360 top-50 teams (higher-ranked teams won 71% of those games, 36-15 w/ a rainout; 12 doubleheaders; eight head-to-head series).  front-page photo courtesy of Bucknell

Kentucky (12-5 vs. #29 Georgia) and Winthrop (6-5 vs. #22 Coastal Carolina) both clinched series upsets, while the head-to-head games between CB360 top-50 teams yielded six other upsets: #36 Auburn has a huge doubleheader sweep of #30 Alabama (7-5; 8-7) … #4 Florida won its opener at #2 Vanderbilt, 6-5 (Commodores then won game-2, 14-1) … #10 Georgia squared its series with #9 North Carolina (9-8) … #46 Baylor similarly tied up its series at #22 Oklahoma State (8-1) … and #44 Mississippi salvaged game-3 vs. #35 Mississippi State (12-3).

Three other underdogs tied up their series, heading into Sunday’s finales: Memphis 5-3 at #18 Rice … Louisiana-Monroe 4-3 at #31 Troy … and Houston 6-5 vs. #11 Southern Mississippi. Washington State crept closer to .500 with a 7-6 series-opening win over #26 Arizona, while Louisville (6-3 vs. #25 Connecticut, in Norwich) and Washington (7-6 vs. #5 Oregon State) each ended their series with upset victories. La Salle opened Saturday with a 5-3 win over #50 Charlotte, but the 49ers went on to win the finale and take the series.

Army (#2 seed) swept its Patriot League semifinal games on Saturday vs. #3 seed Lafayette (4-2; 7-3). If Bucknell beats Navy on Sunday, Army will play host to the best-of-3 title series on May 24-25 (if Navy wins, the Mids will be the host team vs. Army on May 23-24).
