The upset trend in college baseball went to another level on Saturday, with 15 upsets among the 47 games (32%) that were played involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR), after 13 were upset on Friday. Most notably, #36 Oregon won again at #18 Vanderbilt to clinch that series while three top-10 teams were knocked off on their home fields, as: Holy Cross avenged a Friday-night, extra-inning loss by beating #4 Texas A&in 10 (7-3) … Ohio State won 7-3 at #9 Georgia Tech … and Appalachian State rode the pitching of Ryan Arrowood for a 1-0 win at #10 LSU. front-page photo courtesy of Appalachian State

#3 Stanford kept on trucking with a 6-3 win over #8 Texas, clinching that series on the heels of sweeping then-#11 Vanderbilt the previous weekend.

CB360 proposed a mini “state-pride” competition compiling the results from the three Texas schools playing this week in California. Thanks to a sweep by the west-coast teams on Saturday, the combination of Stanford/Fullerton/UCLA now holds a 4-2 record vs. Texas/TCU/Baylor with a slight edge in runs scored (CA-31, TX-28).

Three of Saturday’s other top-50 upsets came in tournament action: #40 Purdue 6-3 at #33 East Carolina … San Diego 13-2 vs. #21 Oregon State … Maryland 11-1 vs. #40 Purdue (at ECU) … and Virginia Tech 3-1 at #45 Coastal Carolina. Auburn won game-2 of Saturday’s doubleheader at #14 Arizona (8-3) but already had lost that series, while Central Michigan also split a DH (7-2 win at #27 Stetson; Hatters lead that 4-game series, 2-1). Similarly, Manhattan split a pair at #42 Florida Atlantic (9-8 win; FAU leads 4-gm series, 2-1).
In addition to the top head-to-head matchups already mentioned above, there were a couple other games that played out on Saturday between CB360 top-50 teams: #5 Rice clinched its series vs. #38 Dallas Baptist (2-0) and #32 College of Charleston picked up a quality win in its tournament, 10-6 vs. #44 Connecticut.
