Seven different underdogs – most notably #19 Oregon State (7-6 vs. #5 Arizona State), Memphis (16-8 vs. #15 Southern Mississippi) and #25 Arkansas (4-3 vs. #16 LSU) – won again on Saturday, clinching their series vs. higher-ranked teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings. front-page photo courtesy of Oregon State
James McCann launched a 3-run home run to beat LSU (4-3), which moments earlier had scored three times in the top of the 9th to end a scoreless deadlock.
After a rough showing on Friday, the higher-ranked teams did better on Saturday (26-12; 68%). Seven teams upset CB360 top-20 teams, three mentioned above along with: #8 North Carolina 8-5 at #7 Florida State (series tied) … #50 San Jose State 4-3 vs. #10 Fresno State (SJSU leads series, 2-1) … #41 Baylor 7-6 vs. #13 Texas (series tied) … and USC 3-1 vs. #14 Stanford (series tied).
A bases-loaded walk by Brian Stamps gave Oregon State a 9th-inning series-clincher vs. Arizona State.
The four other underdogs that clinched series vs. top-50 teams include: #34 Georgia 8-3 at #33 Mississippi … The Citadel 17-14 vs. #45 College of Charleston … UAB 6-1 at #46 Houston … and UC Davis 11-1 at #49 Long Beach State.
Saturday’s other top-50 upset saw Central Arkansas tie its series against #30 Texas State, 6-5 in 11 innings.
