Virginia cashed in a costly Florida State error to score six runs in the ninth, rallying for a 9-8 win and clinching the top-5 series in the process. UVa – #2 in the CB360 Composite National Rankings – pushed across four of its 9th-inning runs with 2-outs, capped by senior second baseman/9-hole hitter Keith Werman’s 2-run single up the middle. In other top-50 head-to-head matchups, #18 Mississippi evened its series with visiting #7 Louisville (7-3) while #9 Clemson swept an ACC home doubleheader from #33 N.C. State (12-7/12-6).

There were four other top-50 showdowns on Saturday, and two of them saw the lower-ranked team emerge victorious: #29 Washington State posted a narrow win (7-6) at #27 Texas A&M, while #46 Liberty bear #34 St. John’s for the second straight day (14-9). The day’s other key matchups saw #6 Arizona State handle #49 Auburn (16-7) and #8 UCLA beat #22 Mississippi State, 5-2, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

It’s been a week of upsets within the CB360 top-50 and that trend continued in a big way on Satuday – as 12 different games resulting in top-50 teams being upset. In addition to the aforementioned wins by Mississippi, Washington State and Liberty, the day’s more noteworthy upsets included Duke taking down in-state rival North Carolina (15-11) and Marshall routing #26 Ohio State (17-1; in Knoxville, Tenn.). Saturday’s other other top-50 upsets were as follws: at Sacramento State 2, #28 UC Irvine 1 … Georgia Southern swept doubleheader from visiting #30 applachan State (8-3/5-2) … at Long Beach State 7, #31 Wichita State 4 … at The Citadel 7, #36 Western Carolina 5 … USC 3, at #39 Hawaii 1 … and McNeese State 10, at #43 Northwestern State 7.
