Six underdogs won series-deciding games on Sunday in action involving top-50 teams from the CB360 Composite National Rankings – with one of the most noteworthy results being Washington State‘s second victory of the weekend at (15) Arizona State, 11-8. After only nine upsets in CB360 top-50 action on Friday and seven on Saturday, the top-50 games on Sunday produced a dozen upsets, as the favorites won only 66% of the games (23-12; two other top-50 games were cancelled). One of the upsets was a rare result, with an NAIA team knocking off a top-25 DI team – as Ave Maria University won 8-6 at (23) Florida Gulf Coast.
In addition to Washington State’s victory at Arizona State, the five other underdogs that won series vs. top-50 teams on Sunday were as follows:
• New Mexico at (22) UNLV (12-7 on Sun.)
• Texas Tech at (36) Texas (4-2)
• Davidson at (38) Furman (7-6, in 10 inn.)
• Monmouth at (46) VCU (7-1)
• and Presbyterian at (49) Connecticut (5-4)
In addition to various games mentioned above, Sunday’s other upsets of CB360 top-50 teams included:
• at (12) Mississippi State 10-2 vs. (4) LSU (Tigers still have not won a series at Dudy-Noble Field since 1971)
• at USC 5-3 vs. (14) Oregon
• at Southern Mississippi 2-1 vs. (27) Central Arkansas
• at Kennesaw State 5-4 vs. (33) Mercer
• at Troy 8-7 vs. (43) South Alabama
The six head-to-head series between CB360 top-50 teams that concluded on Sunday (in addition to Oregon State-Arizona; LSU-Mississippi State; and Ole Miss-Arkansas) included: (1) North Carolina‘s late surge past visiting (31) Miami to win 4-1 and take that series (Skye Bolt’s 3-run HR broke a 1-1 tie in the 8th) … (9) Kentucky winning the series-deciding game at (45) Florida, 6-2 … and (17) Virginia taking game-3 at (28) Clemson, 8-5. Notre Dame (cb360 #19) earlier had won a series-deciding game at (25) Cal Poly, on Saturday.
There were 17 series sweeps (all by the favorites) over the weekend, among 38 involving CB360 top-50 teams. The sweeps completed on Sunday were by Oregon State and Washington State, plus: 2–Vanderbilt (at Auburn), 8–UCLA (vs. Washington), 10–Cal State Fullerton (at Oral Roberts), 11–Georgia Tech (vs. Boston College), 20–Oklahoma (vs. Northestern LA State), 26–Rice (vs. Harvard), 30–Oklahoma State (vs. Iona; 4-gm series), 34–Louisiana-Lafayette (vs. La.-Monroe), 39–Texas A&M (vs. Georgia), 41–Virginia Tech (at Duke) and 43–Southeastern Louisiana (vs. Ark.-Pine Bluff). Two other teams – (13) Louisville (vs. Xavier) and (35) San Diego (vs. BYU) had wrapped up series sweeps on Saturday, while Austin Peay ended up winning its series vs. Eastern Illinois two games to none after a Sunday cancellation. Illinois (cb360 #50) has been playing a 4-game series at Southern Illinois, with gm-3 cancelled on Sunday (series finale on Monday, Illini won fisrt two games).
Elsewhere in the CB360 top-50, (44) Houston completed a 3-0 stretch at home over the weekend (two games vs. New Orleans, one vs. Baylor) while (29) Indiana had completed its week of tournament play in Winter Haven, Fla., on Saturday (the Hoosiers won all five games in that six-day span). Dartmouth (cb360 #42) remained the nation’s only unbeaten team (6-0) after weekend wins, also in Winter Haven, over Army, Long Island and UAB (the Mean Green did not start their 2013 season until March 1 and were idle from March 4-15.
Dartmouth is one of only 11 teams in all of Division I baseball (out of 294) with 0-2 losses. The three 1-loss teams include: Oregon State (19-1), North Carolina (18-1) and Florida State (18-1) and the seven 2-loss teams are as follows: Mississippi (20-2); Vanderbilt (19-2); LSU (18-2); three 17-2 teams (Georgia Tech, Virginia & Austin Peay); and Louisville at 16-2.
Seven of the CB360 top-50 teams were idle on Sunday: (5) South Carolina, (13) Louisville, (19) Notre Dame, (24) Stanford, (25) Cal Poly, (35) San Diego and (40) Missouri State.
