Sunday’s Top-50 Results/Links (4/11)

Washington State beat #1 Arizona State for the second time over the weekend, as one of 13 games on Sunday that resulted in upsets of top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR).

It was a weekend full of several noteworthy upsets – as 12 of the 39 series involving CB360 top-50 squads saw the lower-ranked/unranked team win the series. (front-page photo courtesy of Washington State)

In other top result news, Virginia (#3 in the CNR) beat #4 Georgia Tech, 9-1, to win that top-5 series showdown. It was the second time this season that Virginia has played in an ACC series versus another top-5 team (the Cavs earlier took 2-of-3 from Florida State).

In addition to WSU (which dispatched of visiting ASU, 9-5), the other 12 teams that upset CB360 top-50 teams on Sunday included: #34 Auburn (6-5 vs. #7 LSU) … Duke (7-2 vs. #11 Clemson) … #43 Virginia Tech (4-2 vs. #14 Miami) … Georgia (6-3 vs. #16 Ol’Miss) … South Alabama (7-5 at #19 W. Kentucky) … Missouri (12-11 at #20 Oklahoma) … #23 CS Fullerton (6-1 at #21 Irvine) … Baylor (2-1 vs. #26 TX A&M) … Indiana St. (4-2 at #33 Citadel) … Minnesota (6-3 vs. #35 Michigan St.) … Wofford (5-2 at #44 W. Carolina) … and Southern Illinois (9-5 at #46 Wichita St.).

Seven of the teams mentioned above – WSU, Auburn, Duke, Va. Tech, Fullerton, Baylor and Indiana St. – impressively won their weekend series vs. respective top-50 teams (all were 2-1). Five other teams already had wrapped up similar series upsets on Saturday (each ended 2-1): Pittsburgh (vs. #5 Louiville), Kentucky (vs. #22 Alabama), Oregon (vs. #24 Stanford), Furman (vs. #28 Coll. of Charleston) and UC Davis (vs. #50 Long Beach St.).

Pittsburgh was a couple outs away from sweeping Louisville on Sunday (the Cardials hit a pair of 2-run HRs in the 9th, for a 9-7 win), while Alabama averted being swept by overcoming a 9-0 midgame deficit at Kentucky (11-9 win).

In addition to the aforementioned wins by UVa, Auburn, Fullerton and Va. Tech, there were four other series decided on Sunday that involved head-to-head matchups between teams in the CB360 top-50: #2 UCLA 8, at #11 Oregon St. 2 … #15 South Carolina 2, at #18 Vanderbilt 0 (2-hitter) … #30 Rice 19, at #45 Tulane 1 … and at #32 North Carolina 9, #40 NC St. 6 (#8 Texas completed a sweep vs. #41 Kansas, 10-4).

One day after UCLA and Oregon State battled through a 16-inning marathon, there was another top-50 game with gaudy numbers – as #10 Florida State rallied to win a wild game (17-16) at Wake Forest, completing the sweep.
