Sunday’s Top-50 Results/Links (5/2)

Sunday’s action saw six underdogs win series-deciding games vs. CB360 top-50 teams while Washington – which on Saturday already had clinched its series versus visiting Stanford (#22 in the CB360 Composite National Rankings/CNR) – knocked off the Cardinal again (4-3), completing the sweep against a Stanford team that swept its previous two Pac-10 opponents (Oregon State and Cal). Other key Sunday results saw #12 South Carolina outslug #32 Alabama (20-15) to win that series and maintain its one-game lead in the SEC standings over hard-charging #7 Florida (which won 13-6 to complete a sweep of #7 LSU). SC’s conference record stands at 16-5, followed by Florida (15-6) and a pair of 14-7 teams (Arkansas and Ole Miss).

In a pivotal Big 12 series, #19 Oklahoma won a similar slugfest vs. #31 Kansaa State (15-11) – keeping the Sooners in the thick of the race for second place in the Big 12 (K-St. is 10-7, Texas Tech 12-9 and OU 10-9 … all are well behind the 19-2 league record of Texas).

The other underdogs (in addition to Auburn) that won Suday series-clinchers vs. CB360 top-50 teams included: Troy (6-3 vs. #28 Western Kentucky) … Samford (12-11 vs. #37 The Citadel) … Tennessee (3-1 vs. #40 Kentucky) … Oklahoma State (5-4 vs. #48 Kansas) … and UNC Greensboro (14-2 at #49 Western Carolina). Saturday’s action had seen North Carolina State (vs. #8 Georgia Tech) and USC (vs. #16 Arizona) clinch their series, but neither was able to pull of the series sweep on Sunday.

There was a total of eight upsets suffered by CB360 teams on Sunday: the earlier-mentioned losses by Arkansas, Stanford, Wesetern Kentucky, Citadel, Kansas and West Carolina … along with the University of the Pacific‘s 18-10 win over #15 Cal State Fullerton and Nebraska‘s 1-0 pitchers duel vs #39 Texas A&M.

Seven favorites (based on the CNR) won their Sunday series-deciding games: the aforementioned South Carolina and Oklahoma, plus #10 Florida State (17-1 vs. Le Moyne), #20 Oregon (6-1 vs. Washington St.), #36 New Mexico (20-8 at San Diego St.), #44 Southeastern Louisiana (14-5 at Nicholls St.) and #45 Texas Tech (16-15 vs. Missouri). Clemson (#27 in the CNR) bounced back from a Friday series-opening loss to sweep a doubleheader from Florida Gulf Coast (9-3/7-6), while three games were rained out (no makeup): #18 Connecticut at #34 Pittsburgh (series ended 1-1) and the final two games of the Georgia at #24 Vanderbilt series (Vandy won gm-1; UGa was leading suspended gm-2 but the game was not “official”).

There were seven head-to-head series this weekend between CB360 top-50 teams, with three of those series producing Sunday series-clinching wins (by Auburn, South Carolina and Oklahoma). The CNR’s top-rated team, Arizona State, wrapped up an impressive sweep at #4 UCLA (12-3), joining Florida and #25 California (9-3 vs. #29 Oregon State) in posting showdown-series sweeps.

Sunday featured 40 scheduled games for teams in the CB360 top-50. Five CB360 top-50 teams were idle on Sunday (#9 Louisville, #21 Rice, #41 UNC, #42 Appalachian State and #46 Portland).
