Sunday’s Top-50 Results/Links (5/9; full recap)

Three teams – Oregon State, Elon and Fresno State – all wrapped up their series sweeps of higher-ranked teams in the CB360 top-50 Composite National Rankings (CNR), leading the way among 11 upset wins posted on Sunday vs. CB360 top-50 teams. Three other underdogs (Cal St. Bakersfield, Washington St. and Ark.-Little Rock) posted series-clinching wins on Sunday, which yielded some key results in several conference races. Oregon State (#47 in the CNR) completed a much-needed sweep of #20 Oregon in the baseball version of the “Civil War” rivalry (all three games were decided by one run, including Sunday’s 6-5 battle that saw both teams deliver in clutch 9th-inning situations). In Sunday’s other key Pac-10 upset, Washington State knocked off #24 California for the second straight day (11-9) to clinch that Sat.-Sun.-Mon. series.

When the dust had settled Sunday night, the resulting Pacific-10 Conference standings revealed that only 3.0 games separate 2nd thru 9th place (ASU leads at 14-4): UCLA 10-8, Cal 11-9, Stanford 10-8, Arizona 9-9, Oregon 10-11, Washington St. 8-9, Washington 8-10 and Oregon St. 7-11.

Elon’s third straight win over Appalachian State (13-3) similarly tightened the race in the Southern Conference, as 2.5 games is all that separates the top-4 teams. The Citadel (#39 in the CNR) returned atop the SoCon (18-6), after winning the series finale 6-3 at #33 College of Charleston (2nd in the league, at 19-8). Georgia Southern remained in 3rd place (16-8), followed closely by surging Elon (17-10).

Fresno swept its 4-game series at #48 New Mexico State (8-6 on Sunday), leaving the Bulldogs (11-5) only a half-game behind NMSU (13-6) in the Western Athletic Conference race. In the Sunbelt, Arkansas-Little Rock won again at #34 Western Kentucky (4-2) to claim that series and extend WKU’s second-half swoon

One day after being blown out at #21 Arizona (17-6), upstart Cal State Bakersfield returned the favor by winning 22-5 in Sunday’s series-clincher.

And then there’s the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky (CNR #44) boosted its NCAA Tournament resume by winning Sunday’s series-clincher vs. #11 Souther Carolina, 9-3. That left the door open for #4 Florida to claim the outright lead in the SEC, but #29 Alabama upset the Gators (10-4) in a nice win for ‘Bama’s tournament hopes (SEC and NCAA). Other key SEC results saw #7 Arkansas post a solid series win at #15 Mississippi (7-0 finale) while #25 Vanderbilt impressively won its series at #15 LSU (4-3 on Sunday).

The resulting SEC standings yield a 5-team race for the regular-season title, with SC and Florida still tied at 17-7, followed by Arkansas at 16-8 and a pair of 15-9 teams (Ole Miss and Auburn).

Other noteworthy results from Sunday included Oklahoma wining the deciding game in the Bedlam Series (6-0 vs. Oklahoma State, played in Oklahoma City) while #27 San Diego completed its West Coast Conference sweep at #43 Portland (9-2).

Five high-profile series were decided on Sunday (head-to-head matchups of CB360 top-50 teams): the aforementioned wins by Arkansas, Kentucky and Vanderbilt, plus #2 Texas emerging with the series win at #37 Kansas State (6-5 on Sunday) while #12 TCU left no doubt during its 34-hit, 9-HR display at #32 New Mexico (26-4 finale).

In other showdown series between CB360 top-50 teams, #8 UCLA (7-6 at #50 Washington) joined Oregon State and San Diego in posting their respective high-pressure sweeps. There were 10 total showdown series this weekend, as Florida (vs. Alabama) and College of Charleston (vs. Citadel) both finished with 2-1 margins for the weekend.

Sunday’s 34 games involving CB360 top-50 teams produced 11 total upsets. In addition to those mentioned above, Cincinnati won the series finale at #19 Connecticut (3-2) and Long Beach State downed #35 Stanford (10-5).

All but six of the CB360 top-50 teams were in action on Sunday, with #1 Arizona State, #3 Virginia and #42 Texas Tech currently in idle streaks. ASU is in the midst of a five-day layoff and will return to action on Monday (May 11), vs. BYU. Virginia is taking nine days away from competition, with the Cavs’ next game slated for May 14 vs. North Carolina. Texas Tech has the longest break of the three (11 days) and also will be back in action on the 14th, vs. Baylor.

Three other teams – #13 Miami (2-0 series vs. Barry), #31 Pittsburgh (2-1 series vs. Seton Hall) and #40 Texas A&M (2-1 series vs. Dallas Baptist) – wrapped up their weekend schedule on Saturday. The series involving Miami and A&M were among five this weekend involving CB360 top-50 teams that are non-conference matchups (also Illinois-Chicago at #10 Georgia Tech, CS Bakersfield at #21 Arizona and #35 Stanford at Long Beach St.).
