(follow along) With many conference tournaments starting early next week (Tues./Wed.), many leagues are wrapping up their series on Saturday … thus, many series are starting on Thursday … meaning Wednesday this week is the “calm”/travel day (only 12 Division I games scheduled) … and that all adds up to one of the busiest Tuesday schedules in recent weeks.
There were three head-to-head matchups between top-50 teams in the CB360 top-50 teams, with two of the lower-ranked teams pulling off the upset: at #31 College of Charleston 16, at #5 Coastal Carolina 4 (in Myrtle Beach, S.C.) … and #17 Oklahoma 5, #7 Arkansas 2. Five other underdogs knocked off CB360 top-50 teams, most notably Loyola Marymount winning 11-10 at #12 Cal State Fullerton (the Lions scored 10 runs in the 5th and then survived a Titans rally in the 8th and 9th).
Tuesday’s other four upsets of CB360 top-50 teams included: at Tulane 9, #24 LSU 1 … San Francisco 6, at #26 California 1 … Mississippi State 16, at #40 Southern Mississippi 9 … and at McNeese State 5, #46 Louisiana (Lafayette) 4.
The busy day included 33 games involving top-50 teams from the most recent update of the CB360 Composite National Rankings (May 12; next CNR update coming tomorrow, May 19). There were 36 total top-50 teams on Tuesday’s schedule, led by three head-to-head showdowns: (ARK-OU, CofC-CC, and #50 Florida Gulf Coast losing 5-4 at #13 Miami.
