UVa Ends Coastal Win Streak; LSU & Vandy Among Upset Victims …
Virginia doubled up Coastal Carolina (6-3) in Tuesday marquee matchup between two of the top-ranked teams (#3 & #6) in the most recent CB360 Composite National Rankings (April 21), with the CNR set to be updated and posted on the 28th. The loss snapped Coastal’s win streak at 17 games, second-longest in the history of the Chanticlers baseball program.
Tuesday’s 28 games involving CB360 top-50 teams featuring six showdown series (both teams top-50) while producing four upsets and three postponements/cancellations. The most noteworthy upsets included the University of New Orleans winning at LSU (7-4) and Austin Peay edging visiting #17 Vanderbilt. Note that LSU – now losers of four straight and a .500 team over its past 12 games (after a 26-4 staart) – and Vanderbilt (on a three game slide and 4-4 in its past eight) both already were likely to take a dip in the updated CNR top-50, which will be announced later in the day on April 28.
Tuesday’s other top-50 upsets included #41 Kansas losing at Wichita State (22-7) while #47 Liberty dropped a 3-1 game at Elon.
In addition to the showdown betwee UVa and CC, Tuesday’s other head-to-head matchups between CB360 top-50 teams also went to the higher-ranked teams: at #6 UCLA 4, #38 UC Irvine 1 … at #14 TCU 5, #49 Baylor 4 (10 innings) … #15 Cal State Fullerton 13, at #40 San Diego 10 (2-out, 9th-inning grand slamf rom CSF’s Carlos Lopez) … at #20 Oregon 9, #24 Oregon State 4 … and at #32 New Mexico 16, #48 Texas Tech 8.
Despite Coastal Carolina seeing its win streak come to an end, #2 Texas was able to post its 17th straight victory (6-4 vs. Texas-San Antonio) while #23 Connecticut extended the longest win streak in its program’s history to 22 games (14-6 vs. Bryant).
TCU – which rallied to tie Baylor in the 9th and then won on Joe Welik‘s sacrifice fly – was one of three CB360 top-50 teams that won in 10 innings on Tuesday. #22 Mississippi edged Murray State on Alex Yarbrough‘s 10th-inning home run (11-10), while Ryan Grapel‘s 10th-inning grand slam gave #42 North Carolina a 6-2 win over High Point.
