VMI Upsets Virginia; BYU Beats K-State Again … Nearly 80% (12-of-16) of Wednesday’s games involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) fell into one of two noteworthy categories: upset wins over top-50 teams (6) or head-to-head matchups between top-50 squads (8, with 2 of them also falling into the upset category). The day’s most noteworthy upset saw VMI (#38 in the CNR) upset visiting #3 Virginia, 12-3, a result that surely will boost VMI’s at-large hopes (if needed) when the NCAA Tournament bids are handed out. Wednesday’s other upsets of CB360 top-50 teams included: Jacksonville 10, at #10 Florida State 8 … #44 Western Carolina 7, at #12 Clemson 5 … at BYU 13, #29 Kansas State 10 (Cougars also won gm-1 on Tuesday) … at Western Michigan 11, #35 Michigan State 10 … and UNC Wilmington 7, at #40 North Carolina State 4.
In addition to the wins by VMI and WCU, six other teams won head-to-head matchups vs. a fellow CB360 top-50 team. The #5-6-7 teams in the most recent CNR – Louisville (7-6 at #19 Western Kentucky), Arkansas (5-4 vs. #37 New Mexico; also won gm-1) and LSU (10-4 vs. #45 Tulane – all won top-50 showdowns, as did: #13 Coastal Carolina 12, at #32 North Carolina 4 … #15 South Carolina 10, at #33 The Citadel 4 … and #22 Alabama 10, at #27 Southeastern Louisiana 5.
Georgia figured to possibly give visiting #4 Georgia Tech a challenge, but the Yellow Jackets left no doubt on Wednesday night, winning 25-6.
