The biggest day of upsets from the 2012 college baseball season played out on Sunday, as underdogs won nearly 60% (19-14) of the games involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings. Of the 34 three-game series played over the weekend, 14 were won by the underdogs (41%) – including Boston College‘s sweep of #40 Wake Forest (9-5). In the SEC alone, three underdogs posted series-deciding wins on Sunday: #20 Arkansas 3-1 at #2 Florida (10 inn.) … Vanderbilt 6-1 vs. #3 Kentucky … and #46 Mississippi State 4-2 vs. its rival, #17 Mississippi.  front-page photo courtesy of Nebraska-Omaha

Luis Pollorena (Mississippi State)

Two other teams emerged from the weekend having taken series from top-10 teams in the CB360 top-50 – as #12 Stanford won again at #5 UCLA (7-2) while Memphis claimed a decisive 1-0 thriller at #11 Central Florida. There were five other series-deciding wins on Sunday from the underdogs:
• Portland 4-1 vs. #19 San Diego
• USC 6-2 vs. #22 Oregon State
• Loyola Marymount 4-3 vs. #28 Gonzaga
• #45 Virginia Tech 6-2 vs. #42 Maryland
•  and #26 Virginia 7-4 at #21 Miami (series is 2-0, concludes Monday)

Corey Knebel (Texas)

Three other underdogs had clinched series vs. CB360 top-50 teams on Saturday: Lipscomb vs. #50 Campbell … Tulane vs. #27 East Carolina (ECU won Sunday) … and Wichita State vs. #35 Dallas Baptist (DB won Sun.).

In addition to various games listed above, Sunday’s nine other upsets in CB360 top-50 action were as follows:
• #37 Georgia 5-3 at #6 LSU
• #25 Texas 2-1 vs. #16 Texas A&M
• Clemson 11-8 at #39 Georgia Tech (series-deciding game)
• Michigan State 5-0 at #9 Purdue
• Connecticut 7-4 at #28 Louisville
• Washington state 7-6 vs. #34 Arizona State
• Nebraska-Omaha 7-4 at #41 Indiana State (12 inn.)
• Nicholls State 5-2 vs. #47 Texas State

Connor Harrell (Vanderbilt)

Among the eight head-to-head game on Sunday between CB360 top-50 teams, Clemson was the only higher-ranked team to claim victory.

There were only seven 3-0 sweeps among all of the weekend’s CB360 top-50 action (three of them non-conference): BC vs. Wake … #7 South Carolina vs. Alabama (wrapped up Sat.) … #1 Florida State vs. Rhode Island … #15 Arizona vs. East Tennessee State … #18 North Carolina State vs. Duke … #30 Appalachian State at Wofford … and #36 TCU vs. Manhattan.

Earl Daniels (Georgia)

The seven top-50 teams that were idle on Sunday included: #4 Baylor, #7 South Carolina, #8 Rice, #10 North Carolina, #13 Cal State Fullerton, #38 Pepperdine and #50 Campbell. Rice is off until May 2 (vs. Texas Southern) and UNC also will be in action on May 2 (vs. Winthrop), while Fullerton (vs. USC) and Pepperdine (vs. Cal Poly) don’t play until the first day of May. Baylor, South Carolina & Campbell wrapped up their weekend series on Saturday.
