Four favorites in these showdown games bounced back from Friday losses: #5 UCLA 7-4 vs. #12 Stanford … #17 Mississippi 6-2 at #46 Mississippi State … #42 Maryland 8-1 at #45 Virginia Tech … and #31 Clemson 13-7 at #39 Georgia Tech.

Marco Gonzales (Gonzaga)
Gonzaga’s win Saturday over LMU had plenty of drama, despite the absence of runs – extending to 14 innings before the Bulldogs won, 1-0. Zags sopomore lefthander Marco Gonzales (Ft. Collins, Colo.) logged the first 11 innings of that nailbiter and struck out 15 while facing only 37 batters in a 139-pitch outing (5 hits allowed, no walks or hit batters).
In addition to Lipscomb’s win over Campbell, one other series with a top-50 team wrapped up on Sat., as surgin #7 South Carolina completed its sweep of visiting Alabama (9-1).
The four top-50 teams that were idle on Saturday included #8 Rice, #10 North Carolina, #13 Cal State Fullerton and #38 Pepperdine. Rice is off until May 2 (vs. Texas Southern) and UNC also will be in action on May 2 (vs. Winthrop), while Fullerton (vs. USC) and Pepperdine (vs. Cal Poly) don’t play until the first day of May.
