It seems as if during most weekend this season the underdogs have won somewhere in the range of one-third of the games involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings. Sunday saw that trend continue, as top-50 favorites went 25-13 (with one rainout). There were only 12 sweeps in top-50 series during the weekend (out of 39), one by an underdog – as Southeastern Louisiana closed out #37 Texas State (6-1) for a 24-3 scoring margin in the series. There were plenty of top-50 series (18) that played decisive games on Sunday, with the underdogs prevailing in seven of them (two on the road):
• Virginia Tech 3-2 vs. #8 Miami
• #11 UCLA 6-2 at #10 Arizona
• Georgia Southern 7-6 vs. #27 Appalachian State
• Seton Hall 9-4 at #30 Louisville
• Cal State Northridge 6-3 vs. #31 Cal Poly
• Wake Forest 11-3 vs. #32 Georgia Tech
• Vanderbilt 11-2 vs. #43 Auburn
Benton Moss (North Carolina)
Three other underdogs previously had clinched series vs. top-50 foes but failed to sweep: #40 Georgia vs. #19 Mississippi (ended on Sat.), #18 Oregon at #5 Stanford (Cardinal won 4-2 on Sun.) and Mercer vs. #48 Belmont.
In addition to various games referenced above, Sunday’s three other top-50 upsets included: Sacramento State 10-7 vs. #22 New Mexico State … Duke 5-3 at #41 Maryland … and Portland 4-3 at #44 Pepperdine.
Three teams completed sweeps of fellow top-50 teams: #7 North Carolina 5-3 at #24 Virginia … #13 South Carolina 6-4 vs. #34 Mississippi State … and #29 Arizona State 8-1 vs. #39 USC. #9 Baylor rallied to win both ended of a Sunday doubleheader at Kansas State (14-12; 12-11 in 11) – improving to 15-0 in Big 12 play while extending its win streak to 19 games.
