Oklahoma won 12-6 to complete an impressive series sweep of Baylor (cb360 #2), resurrecting the Sooners’ fading NCAA resume while highlighting Sunday’s slate of 37 games involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings. Based on the relative low number of upsets (9-25, 27%, with three rainouts), Sunday’s results more resembled Friday than Saturday, when a whopping total of 22 cb360 top-50 games were won by the underdogs (eight more than the upset total for Fri. and Sun. combined). Three underdogs posted series-deciding wins on Sunday – most notably Vanderbilt‘s 10-inning, 5-4 win over #4 LSU (pushing the Commodores above .500, and thus NCAA tournament-eligible, for the first time all season) and Southern Mississippi‘s sweep of #28 East Carolina (5-3 resumed game, then 5-4 finale in 12).front-page photo courtesy of Oklahoma

There again were nine series on the docket involving head-to-head matchups between CB360 top-50 teams, with the higher-ranked teams winning five of Sunday’s games (two others were rained out). #38 Sam Houston State wrapped up the Southland Conference regular-season title, by virtue of an 8-3, series-deciding win over #47 Southeastern Louisiana. In another key conference 1-vs.-2 matchup, #24 Louisville topped visiting #45 St. John’s, 6-4, to win that series and move one game back of the Red Storm in a BIG EAST race that will come down to the final week of the regular season.

Cody Reine (Oklahoma)

In Sunday’s other top-50 head-to-head action, #3 Florida rebounded from its gm-2 loss to beat #32 Mississippi State (2-1) and stay in the race for the SEC’s top overall spot … #6 UCLA completed its sweep at #44 Washington, 4-2 … #41 Virginia Tech averted a sweep from visiting #13 North Carolina State, 6-3 … #36 Georgia Tech similarly won gm-3 while boosting its NCAA profile at #16 Virginia (5-4 in 10) … and Arizona State wrapped up a non-conference sweep at #43 Gonzaga, 3-1.

In addition to games mentioned above, Sunday’s three other CB360 top-50 upsets included Evansville’s series-clinching, 1-0 win at #31 Missouri State … Michigan knocking off Big Ten champion and #10 Purdue, 4-3 … and UAB’s gm-3 win at #11 Rice (6-5, in 12).

Of the 37 three-game series involving top-50 teams that were completed over the weekend, only 12 resulted in sweeps for the favored teams, including four by Pac-12 teams (#6 UCLA at #44 Washington, #15 Stanford vs. Washington State, #19 Arizona at California, and #33 ASU at Gonzaga). The weekend ended with only nine favored top-50 teams sweeping a 3 (or 4)-game conference series: UCLA, #7 North Carolina (at Duke), #8 Kentucky (vs. Alabama), #22 Mississippi (vs. Tennessee), #26 TCU (at Air Force), #40 Pepperdine (vs. BYU), #42 Indiana State (at Southern Illinois), #48 Utah Valley (4-gms, at New York Tech) and co-#50 UNC Wilmington (at William & Mary). Of those nine favorites, only six swept their conference series on the road (UCLA, UNC, TCU, Indiana State, Utah Valley and UNCW).

Oklahoma was the only underdog that pulled off the series sweep over the weekend. ASU was not the only team that swept a late-season, non-conference series, as #14 Texas A&M won three straight vs. San Diego State (highlighted by Ross Stripling’s 27-batters-faced, no-hitter in Saturday’s gm-2).

Utah Valley now is riding a 32-game winning streak, following Sunday’s 11-2 win at New York Tech. UVU’s streak ranks fourth in D-I baseball history and is only two shy of the record, shared by the 1977 Texas team and Florida Atlantic’s ’99 squad (Texas also won 33 straight in ’82). Even with its historic unbeaten run, Utah Valley’s NCAA tournament qualification would have to come as an at-large entrant (the Great West Conference does not have an automatic NCAA bid). The streak could reach 41 by the end of the Great West Tournament and heading into NCAA selection day.

Utah Valley entered this past week with a #62 RPI (per WarrenNolam.com) but the number actually dropped to 67th, after playing four straight vs. one of the nation’s worst teams (N.Y. Tech currently has a #295 RPI). Utah Valley will close the regular season at home with a midweek game vs. #202 RPI Utah (May 15) and then a 4-gm series vs. #268 Northern Colorado. Warren Nolan has UVU’s strength-of-schedule at #243 – but the Wolverines own victories this season over Arizona and ASU, while also winning 3-gm series vs. Nevada and Sacramento State (the current #1 and #2 teams in the WAC).

Zane Evans (Georgia Tech)

Two series over the weekend were playing under a Sat.-Sun.-Mon. format (#1 Florida State at #30 Clemson, and USC at #9 Oregon), with FSU-Clemson now set to play a Monday doubleheader after being rained out on Sunday (Monday’s series finale is the ACC game on ESPNU, starting at 6 ET).

Six CB360 top-50 teams were idle on Sunday, after wrapping up their weekend schedule on Saturday (#8 Kentucky, #17 Arkansas, #40 Pepperdine, #35 New Mexico State, #37 Texas and #50 UNC Wilmington).

Sunday’s 37 top-50 results are listed below, with photos and an assortment of postgame links to be added later in the day.

A special dedicated Twitter feed (see below) also is included below, featuring team tweets from top-50 teams playing head-to-head and from the “Bakers dozen” top-13 …
