Purdue‘s amazing 10-run rally in the top of the 9th at UCLA –reversing a 5-run deficit into a 5-run lead (15-11 final) – clearly was the highlight in Sunday’s action, although technically it was not an upset based on the CB360 Composite National Rankings (the #8 Boilers were ranked slightly higher than the #9 Bruins). Underdogs extended their season-long trend by winning roughly one-third of Sunday’s top-50 games (12-25). Elsewhere in head-to-head matchups between CB360 top-50 teams, #12 Oregon won 3-1 at #13 Arizona, in a pivotal Pac-12 showdown series … #26 Oregon State took the decisive game from visiting #7 Stanford (5-4, in 10) … and #35 Clemson clinched its series vs. #30 College of Charleston (12-3; series finale on Monday). A pair of top SEC teams – #4 LSU (12-3 at #21 Mississippi) and #6 South Carolina (10-7 at #15 Arkansas) – close out their key league series, while #42 Georgia completed a sweep of visiting #48 Auburn (9-3). Top-ranked Florida State extended its ACC dominance to 21-2, with Sunday’s 9-2 win over #49 Maryland (FSU will go for the sweep on Monday).

Robbie Rea (Oklahoma State)

Oklahoma State was yet another underdog that won twice over the weekend, claiming the annual Bedlam rivalry series from #45 Oklahoma with Sunday’s 3-2 win. Western Carolina won for the second straight day at #50 Elon, 11-8, with that series to conclude on Monday.

Sunday’s six other top-50 upsets (in addition to those already mentioned) included:
• Texas Tech 8-4 at #14 Texas A&M (12 inn.)
• Presbyterian 7-2 at #18 Central Florida
• UNC Greensboro 10-8 at #28 Appalachian State
• Alabama 8-7 vs. #31 Mississippi State
• Campbell 2-1 at #34 Coastal Carolina
• Wichita State 8-2 at #46 Indian State

The four series that will finish on Monday include FSU-Maryland, Clemson-Charleston, Elon-WCU and Presbyterian-UCF (the Blue Hose and Golden Knights split the first two).

There were 33 top-50 series that finished over the weekend, with only 10 of them producing sweeps. Sunday’s seven series-sweeping wins came from: Georgia (vs. Charleston) … #11 North Carolina (vs. Boston College) … #16 North Carolina State (vs. CS Bakersfield) …#17 Cal State Fullerton (at UOP) … #23 Miami (vs. Bethune-Cookman) …#27 East Carolina (vs. Marshall) … #33 Arizona State (vs. Utah) … and #41 Georgia Tech (vs. Charlotte).

#36 Missouri State also went 3-0 during the weekend, in rare lateseason tournamen action (two wins vs. Air Force and one vs. host Kansas). Of the four series that concluded on Saturday, three were sweeps – including Hawaii taking three from visiting #24 New Mexico State (#40 Dallas Baptist swept Evansville and #20 San Diego went 3-0 at BYU). The other top-50 series that ended on Sat. saw #3 Florida win 2-of-3 at #5 Kentucky.

Only seven underdogs (based on the cb360 top-50) exited the weekend having won, or clinched, their series vs. top-50 opponents: Oregon State, Hawaii, Texas-Arlington, Missouri, Clemson, Oklahoma State and Western Carolina.

Adam Boydston (Texas Arlington)

Another result of note saw #38 TCU edge New Mexico, 2-1, giving the Frogs two weekend wins over the Lobos and leaving those teams tied atop the Mountain West Conference (they now have split six head-to-head meetings, playing twice in a league that currently includes only five teams).

Cornell secured the nation’s first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, beating Dartmouth 3-1 on Sunday to claim the Ivy League Championship Series . They had split on Sat. in that best-of-3 series, with the Big Red winning gm-1 (11-3) and the Mean Green taking gm-2 (7-1).

The four top-50 teams that remained idle all weekend include: #2 Baylor (next vs. Texas State, on 5/9) … #19 Virginia (next vs. High Point, also on 5.9) … #39 Virginia Tech (next vs. NC State, 5-11) … and #43 Wake Forest (next at Miami, 5/11). The five that wrapped up on Sunday: #3 Florida, #5 Kentucky, #20 San Diego, #24 New Mexico State and #40 Dallas Baptist.
