LSU (cb360 #8) won a 10-inning series finale at #7 South Carolina (3-2) and ultimately emerged from a 4-team race to earn the SEC regular-season title – during one of Saturday’s highlight games from among 39 involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings. #11 Rice won 5-2 at #18 Central Florida to earn the Conference USA regular-season title – on a day that saw the underdogs nearly match the favorites (19-20) in cb360 top-50 action.  front-page photo courtesy of Rice

Tyler Duffey (Rice)

Elsewhere in the CB360 top-50, #23 Appalachian State stumbled again at Western Carolina (9-7), opening the door for #42 College of Charleston to earn a share of the Southern Conference title. Another upset resulted in a shared conference crown, as Seton Hall won again at #46 St. John’s (5-4, in 11) – allowing #25 Louisville to tie StJ atop the BIG EAST standings.

A year after seeing three teams tie for the SEC regular-season title (SC, Florida and Vanderbilt each were 22-8 in 2011), it almost happened again – but #2 Florida lost at Auburn (5-4) and #9 Kentucky was swept at #36 Mississippi State (11-3). Also  in the SEC, surging #49 Vanderbilt clinched a finish above .500 (and thus NCAA tournament-eligible status) with a series-sweeping win vs. #26 Mississippi (6-3).

Saturday’s flurry of top-50 upsets included a couple in the Pac-12 – USC 8-4 vs. #16 Arizona and Washington State 9-5 vs. #19 Oregon State (both series tied) – and three in the ACC: #48 Maryland 6-5 vs. #17 Virginia … #38 Georgia Tech 2-1 vs. #24 Miami … and Wake Forest’s sweep of #28 Clemson (7-0).

Saturday’s eight other upsets of CB360 top-50 teams broke down as follows:
• #37 Texas 2-1 vs. #3 Baylor
• Iowa 7-6 vs. #10 Purdue (Hawkeyes won series)
• UC Riverside 6-3 at #15 Cal State Fullerton (series tied)
• VCU 11-2 vs. #30 East Carolina (tournament)
• #39 Missouri State 5-0 at #39 Illinois State (Bears won series)
• Alabama 6-4 vs. #35 Georgia (‘Bama won series)
• George Mason 10-9 at #41 UNC Wilmington
• Marshall 10-0 at #47 Tulane

Tony Kemp (Vanderbilt)

10 underdogs won series on Saturday (or had clinched on Friday): the aforementioned LSU, Mississippi State (sweep), Vanderbilt (sweep), Missouri State, Iowa, Western Carolina, Wake Forest (sweep), Alabama and Seton Hall, plus Penn State (vs. Michigan State).

Seven of Saturday’s head-to-head games between CB360 top-50 squads were won by the lower-ranked squads, with the other results including the win by Rice, plus #11 Florida State winning series vs. #14 North Carolina State (6-2), and #6 North Carolina’s sweep of #44 Virginia Tech (6-2).

Outside of the top-50, the SEC was not the only conference with a four-team logjam – as the Atlantic Sun race saw South Carolina State, Stetson and Kennesaw State all lose on Saturday – with Belmont’s 10-1 win over Lipscomb delivering the Bruins the A-Sun title.

In the Horizon League (also outside the top-50), Valparaiso won 13-2 over Youngstown State and ultimately finished two games clear of preseason favorite Wright State.

In another conference outside the top-50, the Mid-Eastern (MEAC) tournament ended up paring down to the divisional winners – with Delaware State needing to beat Bethune-Cookman twice on Sunday (in Norfolk, Va.). Winner will receive NCAA automatic bid.

#22 TCU’s 4-0 win Sat. over San Diego State means that the Frogs can share the Mountain West title with New Mexico, by beating SDSU again on Sunday.

Sacred Heart won the Northeast Conference tournament (and NCAA automatic bid), earning a return trip to the NCAAs with Saturday’s 5-1 win over top seed and preseason favorite Monmouth (the Pioneers also beat the Hawks in the key winners-braket game on Fri., 6-0).

The Ohio Valley ended up being another shared conference title, as favored Austin Peay (at Tennessee Tech) and contender Eastern Kentucky (at Murray State) both won on Saturday.

Mississippi Valley State now knows its opponent for Sunday’s SWAC title game, after Prairie View A&M beat Texas Southern (winning will receive NCAA bid).

The Summit League was bracing for final-day drama and preseason favorite Oral Roberts took care of business, beating North Dakota State 10-0 to finish 17-6 (ahead of Oakland’s 15-6).

It was a goofy finish in the  Sun Belt, as upstart Arkansas won 7-3 at UALR to finish 19-9 in the league – but Florida Atlantic (19-8) earned the title, after its series finale vs. FIU was rained out.

Finally, New Mexico State won again at San Jose State (4-2) and could forge a 3-way share for the WAC title (with Nevada and Sacramento State) by completing the sweep of SJSU on Sunday.

#21 San Diego is taking a weekend off before returning for the huge WCC showdown at Pepperdine on March 25-27.

Saturday’s 39 top-50 results are listed below, with photos and an assortment of postgame links

A special dedicated Twitter feed also is included below, featuring team tweets from top-50 teams playing head-to-head and from the “Bakers dozen” top-13 …
